About the Fontanelles In The Apple Head Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is born with a soft spot on the top of its skull.  That is called fontanelle. Fontanelles all fibrous membrane-covered gaps that lie between the cranial bones at the intersections of the skull structures in dogs. The literature describes the fontanelle between the interpaietel and supraoccipital bones. Just like the human babies skull has six fontanelles, (places where the skull can shift without breaking). The Chihuahua has the same (just not that many) that allows the skull to shift when they go through the birth canal without damaging the vital organs inside.
In the Apple Head Chihuahua it also allows brain fluid to increase as they grow.

Handle With Care

It is very important to be extremely gentle when handling a Chihuahua puppy as the fontanelle is still developing and can be easily damaged. For example, rough handling, such as dropping or shaking a puppy, can cause serious injuries just like it does in a human baby..
The fontanelle is a normal part of the anatomy of the Chihuahua puppy and helps to ensure proper brain development. Once the bone structure reaches maturity in the skull structure, the fontanelles will close. In Chihuahuas, the fontanelle usually closes between 6 and 12 weeks of age as the puppy’s skull bones fuse together. Once the fontanelle has closed, it is no longer visible and the skull bones become more rigid.
